UNN shuttle drivers Go on strike, insists on increase in shuttle fare

Uramahmedia

The shuttle drivers of the university of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has gone on an indefinite strike.
The strike which started today was reportedly as a result of the fact that the shuttle drivers wants to maintain a shuttle fee of #70 despite the decrease in the price of fuel recently. The shuttle price which was initially #50 for big buses and #60 for mini buses before the increase in the price of fuel, was increased to #70 for large buses and #100 for mini buses during the high cost of fuel saga last week.

The Shuttle drivers had earlier on refused to agree to the request of the students Union government (SUG) of the school to return back to the normal shuttle fare and this had led to the indefinite strike they embarked on today.

The SUG director of information, Comrd. Okpani Obinna speaking on the matter in a memo sent to the university community said,“Warm greetings from the entire Students’ Governing Body (SUG).
It is no doubt that the price of fuel has been normalised and as such the shuttle fee should follow suit.
But after much dialogue with our shuttle drivers on the need to go back to a shuttle fee ₦50 as against the ₦70 currently being charged, they insisted
overwhelmingly and listed many factors ranging from car high cost of vehicle maintenance to the high price of oil etc. as their reasons to maintain the said charge”.

The Students Union Government has in this light mandated that shuttle drivers will maintain the price of ₦50 as shuttle fee to stop exploiting our students but this has created an impasse as the shuttle drivers has insisted they rather go on strike than revert back to ₦50″ he explained.

He concluded that the Students’ Union Government has by this memo urged the entire University community to remain resolute as they (the entire University community) are faced with an impending strike action from the shuttle drivers.

“Thank you and God bless you”he added.
