Paralympics: Nigeria win gold medal, table tennis players in quarter-finals

Team Nigeria won their first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics as Latifat Tijani won the gold medal in the women’s -45kg para-powerlifting on Thursday.

Tijani bettered her performance at the Rio 2016 Paralympics — where she won a silver medal — to claim the gold with a lift of 107kg ahead of China’s Zhe Cui and Poland’s Justyna Kozdryk, who won silver and bronze medals with a lift of 102kg and 101kg respectively.

Nigeria’s other powerlifter who competed on Thursday, Yakubu Adesokan, failed to make a podium position as he finished fourth in the men’s 49kg event.

He could only lift 155kg, while Jordan’s Omar Qarada claimed the gold with a lift of 173kg ahead of Vietnam’s Le Van Vie and Azerbaijan’s Parvin Mammadov, who won silver and bronze medals with a lift of 173kg and 156kg respectively.

Nigeria had mixed results in the para-table tennis events with two out of the country’s seven competitors winning their games, while the remaining five lost.

Ahmed Koleosho and Tajudeen Agunbiade put behind Wednesday’s loss to win their second games at the global sports showpiece.

Agunbiade overcame China’s Yi Zhao 3-2 (11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 6-11, 11-5), while Koleosho defeated Ukraine’s Vasyl Petruniv 3-1 (3-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-8).
