Afrobasket: D’Tigers gun for revenge against Kenya

Uramahmedia

D’Tigers will be gunning for revenge when they face Kenya in their second group game of the ongoing Afrobasket at the Kigali Arena on Friday (today).

Kenya defeated Nigeria’s home-based side 81-69 at the 2019 AfroCan in Mali as the Nigerians failed to make it past the group stage of the inaugural competition after losing 81-55 to eventual winners DR Congo in their final group game.

Nigeria began their Afrobasket campaign with an unconvincing 81-73 win over Mali.

Speaking ahead of the game, D’Tigers coach, Mike Brown, said his side will work more on the deficiencies in their first game against the Malians.

“We have to take care of the ball better, we can’t foul as much as we did against Mali; we will take it one game at a time.”

On the other hand, Kenya who lost their opening game 88-70 to Ivory Coast, will be hoping to get their campaign back on track when they face D’Tigers, who are without their top stars in Kigali.

Kenya, who are making their return to the Afrobasket after 28 years, will be hoping to grab their first win under influential coach, Liz Mills, who is the first female coach to manage a male team to the competition.

The East Africans game plan will be to disrupt D’Tigers play, just like they did against the Ivoirians.

Even though they (Kenya) trailed by more than a dozen points early in the game, Team Morans managed to tie the contest 39-39 at the break, but the West Africans took advantage of Kenya’s naivety in the final quarter to win and tie Nigeria on the log.

The only Kenyan to score in double digits (25 points), Tylor Ongwae, said he was disappointed with the result and would be pushing for a more improved performance against Nigeria.

“I played well, but it doesn’t matter if we lose the game. Next, I think my teammates will come up and our confidence will be up.”
